What's your adoption process?

When you've found an animal on our Web site that you want to adopt, you can meet him or her at one of our adoption sites. You'll be asked to complete a questionnaire so that we can ensure a good match between you and your new pet. If you meet the requirements to adopt that animal, you'll complete our adoption contract. The contract is necessary to transfer ownership of the animal to you. It also contains a record of your pet's vaccines. Your adoption counselor will explain the contract to you and answer any questions you might have. After you sign the contract and pay the adoption fee, you will receive coupons for discounts at animal-related businesses throughout Tucson. After the adoption, a FAIR volunteer may call to see how things are going. We encourage you to contact us if you want to let us know how well you are getting along with your new family member. We always love to hear about our animals!

How much does it cost to adopt?

The cost of adopting an animal is $99. Puppies are adopted for $110.  Purebred or rare cats can be $100-200. Purebred or rare dogs can be $150-$300. Most people think our fees are a bargain, considering that you get a loving companion animal who has been given time to recover from any illnesses, injuries, or surgery in a loving home, and whose adoption fee includes:

• All appropriate immunizations
• Sterilization surgery for all dogs and cats
• Tests for feline leukemia and feline AIDS for all cats
• Licensing in Pima County for all dogs over four months
• A Microchip, to ensure that your new companions always have identification
• A free examination from a participating veterinarian
• 1 month of. veterinary health insurance for Shelter Care for a nominal fee

Because we spend all this money on each animal, FAIR loses an average of $100 on every adoption. The difference is made up by donations from our generous supporters. Even if you got an animal for “free” from the newspaper, the cost of proper basic vet care in the first few weeks would easily exceed FAIR's adoption fees.

Where do FAIR's animals come from?

FAIR takes in animals from local kill shelters. When their time there is up, we place them into FAIR foster homes. We also take in animals to prevent them from going to kill shelters in the first place.

Will FAIR take my animals?

In most cases, the answer is no. There are many, many animals at area kill shelters who will definitely die without our help. Taking animals from the public reduces the number of animals we can save from death at kill shelters. Perhaps you will be willing to foster your animal until we can adopt it out.  Please see our relinquishment programs.

Where is FAIR's shelter?

We don't have one. FAIR's animals live in foster homes all over Pima County. Sometimes, we cannot save an animal because we don't have an appropriate foster home. Our dream is to build a no-kill shelter so that we can save those animals, too. Please consider donating land or money to help us realize this dream. Where can I see an animal that I'm interested in?

Our foster caregiverss have lives just like anybody else, and they bring their foster animals in to the adoption centers on weekends. FAIR does not always know in advance which animals will be at which adoption sites on any given day. If you are interested in meeting an animal, contact us with your name and phone number and we will let you know where you can meet your new friend.

Does FAIR rescue animals other than dogs and cats?

FAIR normally rescues only dogs and cats. However, we have rescued horses, goats, rabbits, snakes, rats, and even turtles. The decision to help these other animals is based first on their need for assistance and next on the availability of foster homes for them.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

FAIR is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Most donations made to us are tax-deductible. However, you should consult your tax advisor for questions regarding your specific tax situation.

What Is my donation used for?

FAIR uses its donations to support all aspects of its operation. However, because FAIR's only goal is to save animals, you can rest assured that your donation is being used to help animals.
